Glossary Terms - "T"
Two Wire
Describes the local-loop transmission path from the customer’s premises to the central-office switch
of a local exchange carrier (LEC) or the connections between a DTE or phone set and a PBX. Data is
received and transmitted over the same wire loop.
T-1
A digital transmission link capable of handling 1.544 Mega bits per second. (also known as a DS-1)
T-3
A digital transmission link capable of handling 28 T-1 lines at 45 Mbps. (also known as a DS-3)
Tandem Office
A telephone company’s major switching center for the switched telephone network that interconnects local
central offices.
Tariff
The list of rates and conditions for particular services offered and supplied by a telephone company.
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Pro
Protocols linking dissimilar computers across networks. TCP/IP was developed by the Department of Defense.
Telephone Directory Number (TDN)
The number assigned to the customer as it appears in the telephone book.
Telecommunications
Process of converting sounds and data into electrical impulses that can be transmitted
(See Telephony).
Telephony
The process of converting sounds into electrical impulses for transmission over a connecting
medium such as wires, fiber optics or microwave.
Three-Way Calling
The process of adding a third party to an existing conversation. The initiating party would
flash-hook the current conversation (thereby establishing a special dial-tone), dial the third
party and flash-hook a second time to add the original party.
Tie Line
A telephone line which is dedicated to connecting two points and which requires a minimum human
intervention to achieve communication.
Toll Free Service
A telecommunications service for businesses that allows calls to be made to a specific location
at no charge to the calling party. Use of the "800" service access code denotes that calls are
to be billed to the receiving party. Toll free prefixes now include 888, 877, 866.
Touch Tone
This is a method that a phone or modem can use to dial a phone number. It uses one audible tone
per digit to be dialed. (DTMF)
Traffic
The volume and intensity of transmitted signals on a communications channel.
Trunk
A telecommunications path between two points, one of which is usually a telephone company’s central
office.
Trunk Group
Multiple trunk circuits between the same two switching centers that can be accessed by dialing a
single trunk number.
Twisted Pair
A pair of insulated wires with a random twist, generally not shielded, and bound together in
a bundle with many more pairs.
