Glossary Terms - "O"
Operating Company Number (OCN)
The number assigned as the company ID for all legal representation and correspondence. It is used when ordering
NXX’s and other key information drivers from the national providers.
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
The manufacturer of equipment that is resold by another vendor who usually substitute their name for that of
the manufacturer on the product.
Off-Hook
A telephone set in use - the handset is removed from its cradle, thus sending an electrical signal to the
central office that a circuit needs to be opened.
On-Hook
The condition when the handset is on the telephone cradle signaling that it is not in use.
ONA. Open Network Architecture
An overall design of a regulated common carrier's basic network facilities and basic services that permits all
vendors of basic or enhanced services (including the common carrier itself) to procure specific basic network
functions and interfaces on an unbundled equal-access basis.
OPS (Off Premise Station)
Telephone station that has a specific identity and is located at a distance from the main switch.
OPX (Off Premise Extension)
Telephone extensions that are located at a distance from the main switch.
OS (Operating System)
The software of a computer that controls the execution of programs, typically handling the functions of
input/output control, resource scheduling, and data management (i.e., MS-DOS, VM/370, or Unix.)
Out of Band Signaling
Signaling which utilizes frequencies lying outside the intelligence band.
Outpulsing
The process of transmitting digital address information, over a trunk, from a switching center or switchboard
to another.
