Glossary Terms - "N"

Network
A combination of transmission facilities and switching capacity which allows users to communicate with other users of linked facilities. Examples: local exchange telephone networks, cellular wireless networks, cable television networks, CAP networks, and private facility-based networks. Any system designed to provide one or more access paths for communications between users at different geographic locations that may include designs for voice, data, facsimile images and/or video images.

Network Architecture
A set of design principles defining the protocol, functions and logical components of a network and how they should perform.

Network Interface
The physical point in a telephone subscriber's home or place of business where the telephone devices and/or inside wiring of the subscriber are connected to the transmission lines of the local telephone service provider.

NID
Network Interface Device.

National Market Center (NMC)
A centralized location responsible for processing CLEC service and billing requests.

National Maintenance Center (NMC)
A centralized location responsible for monitoring and clearing forms of trouble on a national network. Also used as a centralized purchasing clearing house for equipment.

Network Operation Center (NOC)
A center for the monitoring and clearing of trouble on a local or regional network. Also commonly used as a technician dispatch center.

NPA
The first three (3) digits in the 10 digit dialing pattern required to identify the location of the local calling area. (941) 625-1396 The numbers are usually within parenthesis.

Non-Recurring Charges (NRC)
The opposite of Monthly Recurring Charges. These are one time charges and fees or charges that need to be calculated on a monthly basis (such as usage). These are not fixed fees and include installation charges, taxes, etc.

Number Portability
Number portability is the term used to describe the capability of individuals, businesses, and organizations to retain their existing telephone number(s) -- and the same quality of service - when switching to a new local service provider.

NXX
The second three (3) numbers in the 10 digit dialing pattern and the first three (3) numbers of the local seven digit telephone number required to identify which local service provider exchange switch the number is terminated at.

NYNEX
One of the seven Bell Regional Holding Companies (RBHCs) resulting from divestiture, covering the Northeastern U.S., and comprised of New England Telephone and New York Telephone.
