Glossary Terms - "E"

EDI
Short for Electronic Data Interchange, the transfer of data between different companies using networks, such as the Internet. As more and more companies get connected to the Internet, EDI is becoming increasingly important as an easy mechanism for companies to buy, sell, and trade information. ANSI has approved a set of EDI standards known as the X12 standards.

Encryption
The ciphering of data by applying an algorithm to plaintext in order to convert it to ciphertext for secure transmission.

End Office
A local exchange office where the user’s loop terminates (Class 5 telephone central office.)

End User Line Charge (EUCL)
State and federal charges that appear on a customer's phone bill. These charges are designed to eliminate access charges and require end users to directly pay for access of the local phone network for long distance calls.

Enterprise Network
A network that connects every computer in every location and runs a company’s mission critical applications.

Electronic Mail (E-Mail)
E-Mail allows the user to send a message via a computer instantly to one or many persons around the world. E-mail users typically have a "mailbox" on a network or a videotext system where other users can send messages to be retrieved by the recipient.

Equal Access

  1. The provision of exchange access to all long distance carriers on equal terms.

  2. Mandated at divestiture, equal access requires that the Bell Operating Companies (BOCs) provide interexchange carriers (IECs), other than AT&T, the same access to the BOCs’ central office switches as that provided for AT&T. This allows non-AT&T customers to dial long distance over their preferred IEC without having to dial extra digits.

Ethernet
A popular local area data communications network, originally developed by Xerox Corp., which accepts transmissions from computers and terminals

Exchange
A switching center, or the area where a common carrier furnishes service at the exchange rate and under the regulations applicable in that area as prescribed in the carrier’s filed tariffs.
