Glossary Terms - "D"
DACS (Digital Access and Cross- Connect System)
A computerized or manual facility which allows DS-1 (T1) lines to be remapped
electronically at the DS-0 (64 Kbps) level. (Also called DCS or DXS.)
Dark Fiber
Fiber without electronics.
Data
A representation of facts, concepts, or instructions in a formalized manner suitable for
communication, interpretation, or processing. Any representations, such as characters, to
which meaning may be assigned.
Data Compression
Techniques to reduce the amount of computer memory space or transmission resources required
to handle a given quantity of data usually achieved through the application of mathematic
algorithms to the data transformation process.
Data Transmission rate
The speed at which data travels. For example, data may be sent at 115,200bps. Same as transmission
rate, transmission speed, data rate.
Data Stream
Generally, the flow of information being transmitted in a communications system, or path along
which it flows.
DBm
A measure of power in communications: the decibel referenced to one milliwatt (0 dBm = 1 milliwatt
and -30 dBm = .001 milliwatt.)
D Channel
The signaling and data transmission channel (specified in ISDN standards) used to transmit network
control signals for setting up phone calls.
