Daystar FAQ
What is DSL?
Top
DSL is an acronym for Digital Subscriber Line. It’s a state-of-the-art digital technology that permits the simultaneous
transmission of voice conversations and data communications over a single pair of copper wires between a customer’s business
and the nearest telephone company serving central office. This service can generally be provided to businesses which are located
within three miles of the nearest serving central office.
What is an IAD?
Top
An Integrated Access Device (IAD) combines multiple end-user services supporting voice, data and video over a single,
high-capacity circuit. DayStar installs an IAD ( a small white box) at a customer site and it carries both voice and
data traffic for the business.
What is VoIP?
Top
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is simply the transmission of voice traffic over Internet Protocol (IP)-based networks.
The Internet (world wide web) operates on the Internet Protocol, the set of transmission rules for worldwide or local Internet
traffic. The Internet Protocol (IP) was originally designed for data networking but has been recently adapted for voice networking.
With DSL, can I use my computer while making/receiving calls?
Top
Yes, you can use your computer for all normal activities including browsing the Internet. Even though you are using the same DSL
line to provide both voice and Internet service, you can have simultaneous voice calls and Internet sessions.
With DSL, does my computer need to be turned on to make telephone calls?
Top
No, the Internet connection and dial tone are constantly available to provide Internet activity and phone conversations,
whether your PC is on or not. You can swap out servers, internal routers and other data equipment without affecting your
telephone service.
